Planning packages
The decisions that matter this year, each worked through as an explorable memo your client can test.
What a package includes
- A review of the prior-year return, to set the starting facts.
- Two or three explorable memos on the decisions that matter, such as a sale, a conversion or a gift.
- A projection of the current year under the options being considered.
- Visuals ready for the client meeting, and a static PDF of every memo for the file.
Anatomy of an explorable memo
A conventional memo, with every number live.
- Facts
- The client’s figures as defaults — basis, sale price, holding period, income — each one adjustable.
- Issue
- One plain-language question the memo answers.
- Law
- The governing rules, cited to the Code and regulations, with a diagram of the order they apply in.
- Analysis
- Figures in the text recalculate as the facts change, with a chart beside each step.
- Sensitivity
- Which facts move the answer, and the thresholds where the conclusion flips.
- Conclusion
- The recommendation and the conditions that would change it — plus a static PDF for the file.
Typical questions
- Where does a large capital gain land on top of this year’s income, and does the net investment income tax apply?
- How much can be converted to a Roth before the next bracket or Medicare premium threshold?
- Sell an appreciated asset now, give it away, or hold it for a step-up in basis?
- How do owner compensation and the QBI deduction trade off for an S corporation?
How it is delivered
Each memo is a link that opens on exactly the scenario you discussed, in your firm’s name. Your client can adjust the facts and see the answer move; the static PDF records the version you advised on.
See one working: the sample memo Your real marginal rate in retirement shows how far a retiree’s real rate can sit above their bracket, and how much they can convert before it matters.
